Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675/8, 18k Yellow Gold, Brown Bezel, Black “Nipple” Tritium Dial, 1972, Unpolished, Excellent
The GMT-Master was born in the 1950s as a tool for pilots who needed to read two time zones at once. In solid gold, it became something else entirely: a luxurious traveler’s watch for people who flew first class rather than piloted the plane. The reference 1675/8 is the gold version of the classic vintage GMT, and with its brown bezel and black dial with gold “nipple” markers, it is one of the most elegant vintage Rolex sports watches ever made.
The 40 mm Oyster case is made of 18 karat yellow gold and closed with a screw-down crown, protected by crown guards. The bidirectional rotating bezel carries a brown insert with the 24-hour scale. Over the decades, the brown has developed a warm, individual tone that harmonizes perfectly with the gold. This example has never been polished, so the case still shows its original sharp edges and lug lines. For a gold vintage Rolex, where polishing removes precious material, that is especially rare and valuable.
The black dial carries applied gold hour markers in the round, raised shape that collectors call “nipples”. They catch the light beautifully and give the dial depth and a jewel-like character. The markers are filled with tritium, which has aged gently, and the gold hands and 24-hour hand complete the look. The Cyclops lens magnifies the date at 3 o’clock.
Inside works the Rolex caliber 1575 GMT, a self-winding chronometer movement with date and a 24-hour hand for the second time zone. It is known for its robustness and reliability.
The watch is worn on a brown leather strap with an 18 karat gold Rolex pin buckle, which picks up the tone of the bezel and gives the watch a refined, relaxed look.
The watch dates from the year 1972 and is in excellent, unpolished condition. It comes with its box.
"A wonderful and very beautiful gold vintage GMT with nipple dial and brown bezel, in a condition that is very hard to find today - clearly a fine collectors item!"
