Rolex Vintage Submariner Ref. 5512, Stainless Steel, Caramel Tropical Dial, 1961, Pointed Lugs
The 5512 is one of the most important references in Submariner history. Introduced at the end of the 1950s, it was among the first Submariners with crown guards and the larger crown, the design that still defines the Submariner today. It was also the first Submariner certified as a chronometer, which made it the more precise sibling of the 5513. Early examples like this one from 1961 belong to the most sought after vintage Rolex divers of all.
The 40 mm Oyster case is made of stainless steel and water resistant to 200 meters. The crown guards protect the Triplock crown, and the rotating bezel with its 60 minute scale lets you time your dive. The domed acrylic crystal gives the watch its warm, unmistakable vintage look. The case show the typical early pointed Crown guards
The dial is what makes this watch truly special. Over the decades, its original black has turned into a caramel brown, a phenomenon collectors call a “tropical dial”. This change happened naturally through exposure to sunlight and heat, so every tropical dial is unique. Many collectors actively seek these dials, because they give a watch an individual character no other example shares. The luminous markers and hands have aged harmoniously with it.
Inside works a self-winding Rolex chronometer movement, known for its robustness and reliability.
The watch is worn on a steel elastic Oyster bracelet - bit later from 3/1969.
It dates from 1961 and is in beautiful orginal condition.
"An early chronometer Submariner with a mesmerizing tropical dial, and a true collector’s piece from the golden age of Rolex divers.!"
