Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 1680, Stainless Steel, Tritium Dial, Fat Font Ghost Bezel, 1977, Bracelet (A)
The 1680 holds a special place in Rolex history: it was the first Submariner with a date. When it appeared at the end of the 1960s, it added the date window and the Cyclops lens to the classic dive watch, and with that it created the look every Submariner Date still has today. Collectors love it for its honest tool watch character, and this example has a detail that makes it truly individual.
The 40 mm Oyster case is made of stainless steel and water resistant to 200 meters. Without crown guards being oversized and with its slim, elegant lugs, it has the balanced proportions of a true vintage Rolex. The domed acrylic crystal and the Triplock crown complete the classic look.
Over the decades the black aluminium insert has faded to a soft gray tone, and collectors call this a "ghost bezel“. This and the Fat Font, is what gives this watch its personality. Every faded insert looks a little different, which makes each watch unique. Many collectors actively seek these bezels, because they show the honest patina of a watch that has lived its life.
The black dial carries the white "Submariner" lettering of the later 1680 and tritium markers that have aged harmoniously over time. Together with the silver faded bezel, they give the watch a cool vintage look.
Inside works the Rolex caliber 1575, a self-winding movement with date that is known for its reliability and robustness.
The watch dates from 1977 and is very good orignal condition - Oyster bracelet with letter „A"!
"A beautiful Fat-Font-Sub with real vintage character, and a bezel that tells its own story!"
