ROLEX KING MIDAS as Ref. 4316 – Ultra Rare, Circa 1976
We are delighte to present you this ultra-rare example of Rolex’s opulent design language, this King Midas, reference 4316, in 18k white gold.
First appearing in the Rolex catalogue in 1962, the King Midas was named in honour of the legendary Greek monarch whose touch turned all to gold. Crafted entirely in solid 18k white gold and weighing more than any other gold wristwatch of its time, the King Midas was the most expensive Rolex of its era—commanding a premium of approximately 40% over the Day-Date.
Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta—like the other of his iconic work on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus—the King Midas was inspired by classical Greek architecture, evoking the grandeur of the Pantheon and the mythology from which it draws its name. Initially released in a strictly limited series, the model would later find its place within the Cellini line.
This King Midas here has got a silver, brushed dial with black roman numerals. Special for this model, the name Midas is written in Greek letter.
Offered here in very good condition, the present example represents an extraordinary opportunity to acquire one of the most distinctive and significant Rolex timepieces.
