ROLEX VINTAGE EXPLORER II – Reference 1655 – Bj 1976 – Service Dail / Hands / Bezel - Excellent
The Rolex Explorer II is one of the most distinctive professional watches ever created by Rolex. This 1976 example represents the pure spirit of the brand’s exploration heritage — robust, highly legible, and purpose-built for extreme environments.
Crafted in stainless steel, the watch is fitted with a later-generation Rolex Oyster bracelet, combining the authentic vintage case with the durability and comfort of Rolex’s iconic bracelet design. The watch features Rolex service dial, hands, and bezel, giving it a fresh and highly legible appearance while preserving the character of this classic reference.
With its bold fixed 24-hour bezel and the signature 24-hour hand, the Explorer II stands out as one of the most recognizable vintage Rolex tool watches ever produced.
The Rolex Explorer II was introduced in 1971 as a specialized tool watch designed for cave explorers, mountaineers, and polar adventurers—professionals who could spend long periods without natural daylight. In such environments, distinguishing between day and night becomes difficult. To solve this problem, Rolex equipped the Explorer II with a fixed 24-hour bezel and an additional 24-hour hand. This allowed the wearer to clearly differentiate between daytime and nighttime hours, making it an essential instrument for explorers working underground or in polar regions.
The early generation Explorer II, reference 1655, quickly became famous for its large orange 24-hour hand, which collectors later nicknamed the “Freccione” (Italian for “big arrow”). While the watch was originally designed purely as a functional tool, it has since become one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex sports models due to its unique design and relatively limited production.
Today, the Explorer II from the 1970s is admired for its authentic tool-watch aesthetic, historical importance, and unmistakable character within the Rolex professional lineup.
