Our remarks

ROLEX Vintage DAY-DATE Ref. 6611 "École Horlogère" – Stainless Steel – Featured in Collection Monegasque (Pages 58–59) – Circa 1955 – Extremely Rare Museum-Quality Collector's Piece

We are pleased to present one of the most extraordinary and historically significant Rolex watches ever offered to collectors: the Rolex Day-Date Ref. 6611 "École Horlogère" in stainless steel. Produced during the earliest years of Day-Date manufacturing and believed to have been created exclusively for educational and training purposes within Rolex's watchmaking schools, this exceptional timepiece occupies a unique and almost mythical position within the history of the Crown.

The Day-Date has always been regarded as Rolex's ultimate prestige model and was traditionally reserved for precious metals only. Consequently, the existence of a small number of stainless steel Ref. 6611 examples remains one of the most fascinating chapters in vintage Rolex history. These watches were never intended for commercial sale and were reportedly manufactured for use by watchmaking students and technical training programs, making surviving examples among the rarest and most coveted Rolex watches known today. Several respected sources and auction records reference only a handful of known examples, elevating the model to near-legendary status among serious collectors.

Manufactured around 1955, this remarkable watch represents the formative years of the Day-Date collection, introduced as the world's first wristwatch to display both the day of the week in full and the date.

The classic 36 mm Oyster case is manufactured entirely from stainless steel—a configuration virtually unheard of for the Day-Date family. Preserved with the elegant proportions and distinctive tonneau-shaped profile characteristic of early references, the case embodies the refined aesthetics of Rolex's golden era while offering a fascinating contrast to the precious-metal exclusivity that would later define the collection. The fluted bezel, screw-down Oyster crown, and beautifully balanced architecture contribute to a design that remains instantly recognizable nearly seventy years later.

The dial perfectly captures the charm and character of early Rolex production. Featuring the iconic day aperture beneath 12 o'clock and magnified date display at 3 o'clock, the watch showcases the groundbreaking layout that established the Day-Date as Rolex's flagship model. Elegant applied markers, period-correct typography, and harmonious proportions create a timeless aesthetic admired by collectors worldwide.

Powering the watch is the legendary Rolex Caliber 1055, one of the manufacture's most important early automatic chronometer movements. Developed specifically for the Day-Date series, the movement earned the prestigious "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" designation and became a benchmark for precision, reliability, and technical innovation during its era. Revered by vintage Rolex specialists, the Caliber 1055 remains a milestone in the history of Swiss watchmaking.

Further enhancing its desirability, this exceptional example is illustrated in the prestigious book Collection Monegasque by Pucci Papaleo, appearing on pages 58–59. Inclusion in one of the most respected publications dedicated to important watches provides additional validation of the watch's significance and provenance while firmly establishing its place among the most important collector-grade Rolex timepieces. Comparable steel "school watch" examples have likewise been documented in major horological literature and auction catalogues, where their rarity has long been recognized.

Presumably only 6 pieces are knopwn to be build bearing reference 6511. All of these have no serial number engraved in thecase.

Beyond its extraordinary rarity, the Ref. 6611 École Horlogère represents a unique opportunity to acquire a watch that bridges Rolex history, educational heritage, and collecting folklore. While many vintage Rolex references are rare, very few possess the combination of bespoke provenance, historical significance, and near-mythical status associated with these steel training watches.

This Rolex Day-Date Ref. 6611 "École Horlogère" is offered with:

Combining the prestige of Rolex's flagship model with extraordinary provenance and documented publication in Collection Monegasque, this remarkable watch stands among the most significant vintage Rolex discoveries and represents a true cornerstone for the world's most advanced collections."
