ROLEX MILGAUSS Ref. 116400 Stainless Steel Black Dial Box Papers Bj-2007 LC100 Excellent
We are pleased to present a beautiful example of Rolex's most unconventional tool watch: the Milgauss, Ref. 116400, in the clear crystal black dial execution from the very first year of the reference's 2007 relaunch, following a near twenty year absence from Rolex's catalogue.
Originally conceived in 1956 for scientists, engineers, and medical professionals working around powerful electromagnetic fields, the Milgauss takes its name from the French mille, meaning one thousand, and gauss, the unit of magnetic measurement, a direct reference to the watch's ability to withstand magnetic fields of up to 1000 gauss. This protection is achieved through an internal ferromagnetic shield acting as a Faraday cage around the movement, a piece of genuine scientific engineering hidden entirely from view.
The 40mm Oystersteel case presents a beautifully understated black dial, its uniform white luminous baton indices kept deliberately free of numerals, allowing the watch's true signature to take centre stage: the bright orange lightning bolt shaped seconds hand, tipped with an arrow, sweeping across the dial alongside the matching orange Milgauss lettering. This clear sapphire crystal execution, predating the later green tinted Glace Verte anniversary editions, offers the purest and most legible reading of the dial as Rolex originally intended it in 2007.
At the heart of the watch beats the automatic Calibre 3131, developed specifically for the modern Milgauss and fitted with Rolex's blue Parachrom hairspring, a paramagnetic alloy of niobium and zirconium entirely unaffected by magnetic fields, alongside an escape wheel and pallet fork in antimagnetic nickel phosphorus. Chronometer certified by COSC and finished to Rolex's Superlative Chronometer standard, the movement delivers a dependable 48 hour power reserve within a case rated to 100 metres water resistance, secured by a screw down Twinlock crown and case back.
Completing the watch is its Oyster bracelet in matching Oystersteel, fitted with a folding Oysterclasp and Rolex's Easylink 5mm comfort extension system.

"The clear crystal Milgauss 116400 remains one of the most quietly distinctive watches Rolex has ever produced, genuine scientific engineering wrapped in a design unlike anything else in the Oyster collection. Clearly a future collectors piece!"
