Rolex Daytona Cosmograph Ref. 16523 – Early R-Series – Zenith Movement – Flowting Gold Tritium Dial – 18k Yellow Gold & Stainless Steel – 1988 - Just Serviced by our Watchmakers
We are proud to present this highly collectible Rolex Daytona Cosmograph Ref. 16523, an early R-Series example from 1988, representing one of the most important transitional references in Daytona history.
Introduced in 1988, the reference 16523 marked a new era for the Daytona collection as Rolex unveiled its first automatic chronograph generation. Powered by the legendary Rolex Calibre 4030—based on the renowned Zenith El Primero movement—the model combined Rolex engineering with one of the most celebrated chronograph calibres ever produced. Today, these early “Zenith Daytonas” are regarded among the most desirable modern vintage Rolex references.
This example features the wanted and attractive gold tritium dia with flowting Cosmograph. Its dispaying the cool vintage charm collectors seek in early production pieces. The harmonious combination of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold creates the unmistakable two-tone aesthetic that defined an entire generation of Rolex sports watches while offering a distinctly luxurious interpretation of the Daytona.
The 40 mm Oyster case is fitted with the correct tachymeter bezel and retains the balanced proportions that have made the Zenith-era Daytona one of the most wearable chronographs ever produced. Has got the early 200 tachymeter bezel engraving.
At its heart beats the Rolex Calibre 4030, extensively reworked by Rolex from the original Zenith architecture with over 200 modifications to improve reliability, durability and chronometric performance. The movement remains one of the defining achievements of the Daytona lineage and represents a fascinating chapter before Rolex transitioned to its fully in-house chronograph calibres.
