Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3800/1A-001, Stainless Steel, Black Roman Dial, 2000, Wempe

When the Nautilus first appeared in 1976, its 42 mm case was so large that people called it the “Jumbo”. In 1981 Patek Philippe introduced a smaller version, the reference 3800, with a 37.5 mm case. It kept every detail of Gérald Genta’s design and made the Nautilus wearable for a much wider audience. Today collectors appreciate the 3800 more than ever, because its proportions feel perfectly balanced on the wrist. This example has a dial that makes it truly special.

The case is made of stainless steel and carries all the classic Nautilus features: the rounded octagonal bezel inspired by the portholes of ocean liners, the characteristic “ears” on the sides and the integrated steel bracelet with its satin and polished links. It closes with a Nautilus folding clasp. The watch is slim and wears beautifully on the wrist.

The black dial carries a plain all black dial with applied white gold Roman numerals. Most 3800s were delivered with baton markers, so a Roman numeral dial is a rare sight on this reference. The numerals give the sporty Nautilus a more classic, elegant character, and against the black background they look especially refined. The date window sits at 3 o’clock.

Inside works the self-winding Patek Philippe caliber 335 SC with central seconds and date, a reliable and finely finished movement.

The watch dates from 2000 and was originally sold by Wempe. It is in very good condtion. It comes with its papers, leather card holder, all links and Patek booklets.
