Patek Philippe Calatrava “Clous de Paris” Ref. 5119J-001, 18k Yellow Gold, 2009
In 1932 Patek Philippe introduced the first Calatrava, the reference 96, and with it created the archetype of the round dress watch. Its design followed the Bauhaus idea that form should follow function, and it has influenced elegant watches ever since. Among all the Calatrava models, the “Clous de Paris” is perhaps the most recognizable. Its bezel is decorated with a fine hobnail pattern, which collectors call Clous de Paris, and it gives this classic watch a subtle, jewel-like sparkle.
The 36 mm case is made of 18 karat yellow gold and has the timeless proportions that made the Calatrava famous. The hobnail pattern on the bezel is guilloched with great precision, and it catches the light differently with every movement of the wrist. It is a decoration that looks restrained at first glance and reveals its craftsmanship only when you look closer. Through the sapphire caseback you can admire the movement.
The white dial carries black Roman numerals and slim black leaf hands. The small seconds at 6 o’clock completes the clean, balanced layout. It is the very picture of a classic dress watch, calm, elegant and beautifully legible.
Inside works the manually wound Patek Philippe caliber 215 PS, a slim movement that has proven its quality over decades. Its fine finishing can be enjoyed through the caseback, and winding it by hand each morning is part of the ritual of owning a Calatrava.
Its worn on a black aligator strap with a PP pin buckle.
The watch dates from 2009 and is in excellent condition. It comes with box and papers.
"The quintessential dress watch, with a bezel that shows Patek Philippe’s love of fine detail."
