A. Lange & Söhne Langematik Big Date Ref. 308.031, 18k Rose Gold, Black Dial, 2003, Service 2023
The Langematik was the first automatic watch A. Lange & Söhne made after the company returned to Glashütte. With the Big Date version, Lange combined it with the feature that has become its signature: the large outsize date, inspired by the five-minute clock in the Semper Opera House in Dresden. The result is a compact, elegant watch that carries a lot of clever engineering inside.
The 37 mm case is made of 18 karat rose gold. It is a classic, understated size that fits well under a shirt cuff and feels very comfortable on the wrist. The polished case and the angled bezel give it a refined look, and the display back lets you see the movement. The watch sits on a brown crocodile strap with an original rose gold pin buckle.
The black dial works beautifully with the warm tone of the rose gold. The applied rose gold baton markers and the alpha hands, filled with luminous material, stand out clearly against the black. At 12 o'clock sits the big date in its double frame, and at 6 o'clock the small seconds. The date can be advanced quickly with the push button on the side of the case.
Inside works the Lange caliber L921.4 SAX-O-MAT. Like every Lange movement it is finished by hand, with a three-quarter plate in German silver, a hand engraved balance cock and blued screws. The rotor is made of gold with a platinum weight.
A special feature we love is the patented zero reset: when you pull the crown, the small seconds hand jumps back to zero, so you can set the watch precisely to the second.
The watch dates from 2003 and is in very good condition. It was serviced in 2023 and comes with the original box and an extract from the Lange archive.
