IWC Portugieser Hand-Wound Ref. IW545407, Stainless Steel, Black Dial, 44 mm, 2014, IWC Service September 2026
The first Portugieser was made in the late 1930s for two Portuguese businessmen who wanted a wristwatch as precise as a marine chronometer. IWC fitted it with a pocket watch movement, and that is how one of the great watch families began. The Portugieser Hand-Wound goes back to exactly that idea: a large, clean watch with a hand-wound pocket watch movement. It is the purest Portugieser you can wear.
The 44 mm case is made of stainless steel and measures just under 10 mm in height. The arched sapphire crystal gives the watch its typical soft profile, and the display back lets you look deep into the movement. Despite its size, the watch sits flat and comfortably on the wrist.
The black dial carries rhodium plated Arabic numerals, the elegant leaf-shaped hands and the railway track chapter ring that has defined the Portugieser since the very beginning. The small seconds at 6 o'clock sits on a silver subdial, and its "60" is printed in signal red. It is a tiny detail that gives the calm dial just the right amount of character.
Inside works the IWC caliber 98295. Its design pays tribute to the historic pocket watch calibers of Florentine Ariosto Jones, the American who founded IWC in 1868. The three-quarter bridge in German silver with Geneva stripes, the Breguet hairspring and the long precision index make it a real pleasure to look at through the caseback. It beats at a calm 18,000 vibrations per hour, offers around 46 hours of power reserve, and its seconds hand stops when you pull the crown, so you can set the watch to the second.
It is worn on an IWC black aligator strap with a steel pin buckle.
The watch dates from 2014 and is now again in excellent condition. It was serviced by IWC in September 2026 and comes with its warranty card and the service papers. Two years of IWC warranty on this - Sept. 2028!
