Our remarks

IWC Big Ingenieur Chronograph Ref. IW378406, Stainless Steel, Black Dial, 45.5 mm, 2014, IWC Service 2024

The Ingenieur has been one of IWC’s most important watches since 1955, when it was created for engineers and scientists who needed a robust, precise watch for technical work. In 2009 IWC gave the line a powerful new member: the Big Ingenieur Chronograph. It combines the strong, technical design language of the Ingenieur with one of IWC’s finest in-house chronograph movements, and in steel with a black dial it shows the collection at its most purposeful.

The 45.5 mm case is made of stainless steel and has a strong, confident presence on the wrist. The bezel carries an engraved tachymeter scale for measuring speed, and the screw-down crown makes the watch water resistant to 120 meters. Through the sapphire caseback you can watch the movement at work.

The black dial is clear and highly legible. The chronograph’s elapsed hours and minutes are combined in a single subdial at 12 o’clock, where they can be read just like the time on a small clock. It is a clever, intuitive solution that IWC is known for. The small seconds sits at 6 o’clock, and the date window completes the balanced layout. Luminous hands and markers keep the watch readable in the dark.

Inside works the IWC manufacture caliber 89361, a self-winding chronograph movement with flyback function. With a single push, the running chronograph can be reset and restarted instantly. The movement offers a generous power reserve of around 68 hours.

It is worn on an unworn black leather strap and IWC pin buckle.

The watch dates from 2014 and is in excellent condition. It was serviced by IWC in 2024 and comes with box, papers and the service papers.

"A bold engineer’s chronograph with one of IWC’s best in-house movements!"
