Vintage Breitling Navitimer Chronograph Ref. 0818 – Venus 178, circa 1970

We are delighted to present this beautiful vintage BREITLING NAVITIMER Chronograph, Reference 0818, a distinctive example of Breitling’s legendary aviation chronographs from the golden age of mechanical watchmaking.

Combining unmistakable pilot-watch aesthetics with the functionality of a mechanical chronograph and an integrated circular slide rule, this impressive Navitimer captures the spirit of an era when precision instruments were essential tools for professional aviators.

Presented in a substantial stainless-steel case measuring approximately 48 mm, this Navitimer has a commanding wrist presence and the unmistakable character of a true vintage pilot’s instrument. It is fitted with a black leather strap and a stainless-steel Breitling folding clasp, completing its classic and purposeful appearance.

Introduced in 1952, the Breitling Navitimer became one of the most iconic pilot’s watches ever created. Its signature circular slide-rule bezel was designed to assist pilots with practical flight calculations, including fuel consumption, average speed, distance, and unit conversions.

The Reference 0818 carries this distinctive aviation heritage forward with a bold design, a highly functional dial layout, and the mechanical charm that makes vintage Navitimers so appealing to collectors and enthusiasts today. Inside the watch beats the hand-wound Venus 178 chronograph movement, a celebrated Swiss mechanical calibre widely associated with classic Breitling chronographs of this period.

The watch features a beautiful glossy black tritium dial, preserved in very good condition and displaying the authentic character that makes vintage Breitling timepieces so attractive.

The hour indices exhibit a subtle, natural patina, adding warmth and individuality without detracting from the dial’s overall appeal. The outer minute track has developed an attractive light-beige fading, creating a pleasing contrast against the dark background and reinforcing the watch’s unmistakable vintage character.

The silver-coloured sub-dials provide excellent visual contrast, while the distinctive orange hands stand out beautifully against the black dial, enhancing legibility and adding a vibrant touch to the overall design.

This is a very well-kept vintage Navitimer that retains its distinctive visual appeal and authentic period character.
