Audemars Piguet Vintage Royal Oak “Mini Jumbo” 36 mm Ref. 14700BA, 18k Yellow Gold, Grey Tapisserie Dial, 1991 - Excellent
The Royal Oak changed watchmaking when it appeared in 1972, but its 39 mm “Jumbo” was a big watch for its time. In the 1980s Audemars Piguet answered with a more compact version: the reference 14700, which collectors call the “Mini Jumbo”. It keeps every detail of Gérald Genta’s original design in a 36 mm case, a size that wears beautifully on almost any wrist. In full yellow gold, it is one of the most luxurious and sought-after neo-vintage Royal Oaks, and it paved the way for the famous 14790 that followed in 1992.
The 36 mm case is made of 18 karat yellow gold. The octagonal bezel is secured with eight hexagonal screws, and brushed surfaces alternate with sharp polished bevels across the case and the integrated gold bracelet. In solid gold, this interplay of finishes is especially striking, and the watch has a satisfying weight on the wrist. The bracelet closes with an AP folding clasp.
The grey dial carries the “Tapisserie” pattern, the fine waffle structure that has defined the Royal Oak from the very beginning. The cool grey makes a beautiful contrast to the warm yellow gold and gives the watch a more understated, modern look than the usual gold or champagne dials. The applied gold markers and baton hands are filled with luminous material, and the date window sits at 3 o’clock.
Inside works an Audemars Piguet/Jaeger self-winding movement 222 with date, finely finished and known for its reliability.
The watch dates from 1991 and is in very good to excellent condition. It is sold without the original box and papers.
"A full gold Royal Oak in the compact size many collectors now prefer, with a beautiful dial that sets it apart from any current models!"
