AUDEMARS PIGUET Vintage Automatic Gentleman's Watch, 18k Yellow Gold, Tonneau Case, Clous de Paris Décor, Gübelin Dial, Year 1967, Rare
Long before the Royal Oak turned Audemars Piguet into a household name, the manufacture was quietly building dress watches like this one, understated, technically sound, and finished with a level of detail that only reveals itself once you look closely.
The case is 18k yellow gold in a tonneau shape, the softly curved barrel silhouette Audemars Piguet favored for its dress watches through the 1960s, fitted with a screw down back and worn on its original bracelet. Across the top of the case and onto the dial itself runs the Clous de Paris décor, a fine hobnail guilloché pattern cut by hand, the kind of detail watchmakers of this era used to signal quality without ever raising their voice about it.
Signed for Gübelin, the respected Swiss retailer, the dial carries applied baton hour markers and matching baton hands, a clean, legible layout that lets the guilloché texture do the talking. Retailer signed dials like this one add a layer of provenance collectors specifically look for, tying the watch to a known point of sale rather than leaving it anonymous.
Inside runs an automatic movement C21C, typical of Audemars Piguet's output from this period, compact and slim enough to keep the case wearing close to the wrist despite its solid gold construction.
This example is in very good, authentic condition.
"A vintage AP that proves the manufacture's reputation for quiet, beautiful hand finished quality long predates the watch everyone recognizes it for today."
