ROLEX VINTAGE SUBMARINER “JAMES BOND” – Ref. 6536 – Stainless Steel -- 37mm – Radium Spider Dial –
1956 – Rare
We are honored to present this exceptionally rare and highly collectible Rolex Submariner Ref. 6536, often referred to by collectors as the “James Bond” Submariner, dating to 1956.
The Ref. 6536 represents one of the earliest and most historically significant Submariner references, distinguished by its slim, no-crown-guard stainless steel case and understated proportions, emblematic of Rolex’s pioneering era in professional dive watches. Measuring approximately 38mm, the case offers a purity of design that later references would build upon.
This example features a highly desirable original radium dial, which has aged into a spectacular “spider” configuration, with natural lacquer crazing spread evenly across the dial surface. The luminous radium hour plots and hands display deep, honest patina consistent with age, contributing to the watch’s unmistakable vintage character and authenticity.
The glossy black dial is signed with the early gilt Rolex typography, paired with the iconic pencil hands and a small crown, further reinforcing its early-production charm. The watch is fitted with a period-correct rotating bezel, completing the classic Submariner silhouette that would later gain cinematic fame.
Powering this historic timepiece is the Rolex automatic Caliber 1030, one of Rolex’s earliest in-house automatic movements, celebrated for its robustness and technical innovation during the 1950s. The Oyster bracelet is a more recent one from late seventies.
Dating from 1956, this Submariner is preserved in attractive vintage condition, with strong originality throughout — a key factor in its desirability among serious collectors. Examples of Ref. 6536 with original radium spider dials are exceedingly rare and seldom offered on the market.
“The Ref. 6536 is Submariner history in its purest form — a tool watch born before legend, defined by rarity, authenticity, and timeless design.”
