Rolex Sea-Dweller "Double Red" Ref. 1665, Mark III Dial, Stainless Steel, 1975, Box Warranty Papers, Bj-1995
Among vintage Rolex divers, the Double Red Sea-Dweller holds a very special place. Its nickname comes from the two lines of red text on the dial, "Sea-Dweller" and "Submariner 2000", which make it instantly recognizable. It was built for professional saturation divers, and it was one of the first watches with a helium escape valve. Today it is one of the most collected Rolex references of the 1970s.
The 40 mm Oyster case is made of stainless steel and water resistant to 610 meters, or 2000 feet, which is exactly what the red "Submariner 2000" on the dial refers to. The helium escape valve on the left side of the case lets gas escape during decompression, so the crystal stays in place. The original rotating bezel with its 60 minute scale (Tritum dot is a recent one!) and the Triplock crown complete the tool watch character.
As with all early Sea-Dwellers, the date at 3 o'clock has no Cyclops lens, which gives the dial a very clean look.
The amzingly well kept Tritium dial is a Mark III, one of the dial variants collectors distinguish on the 1665 by small differences in the printing. Such details matter a lot to connoisseurs, and they have a big influence on the value. The tritium markers have aged beautifully and fit the watch's production year perfectly. With a serial number in the 4.1 million range, the case dates the watch to 1975.
Inside works the Rolex caliber 1575, a self-winding movement with date that is known for its robustness and reliability.
The watch is in excellent condition. Last Rolex serviced in 2020. Coming with the oiriginal box and stiched warranty papers, plastic card holder (in two pieces).
"A beautifully kept and highly collectable Double Red with a Mark III dial, that's what connoisseurs are looking for!"
