Rolex GMT-Master “Pepsi” Ref. 1675, Long E Tritium Dial, Expandable US Oyster Bracelet, 1967
The GMT-Master was born in the 1950s, when pilots of Pan American Airways needed a watch that could show two time zones at once. Its red and blue bezel, one color for the day hours and one for the night, became one of the most recognizable designs in watchmaking. Collectors call it the “Pepsi”, and the reference 1675 is the classic vintage version that stayed in production for more than twenty years.
The 40 mm Oyster case is made of stainless steel and closed with a screw-down crown, protected by crown guards. The bidirectional rotating bezel carries the 24-hour scale in red and blue. Its colors have aged gently over the decades, which gives this watch the warm vintage character collectors look for.
The original black dial is a “Long E”, one of the most desirable dial variants of the 1675. The name comes from the letter E in the Rolex signature, whose middle bar is as long as the upper and lower ones. Small details like this are what experienced collectors look for, and they make a big difference to the appeal of a vintage GMT. The tritium markers have aged harmoniously and match the hands perfectly. The red 24-hour hand shows the second time zone against the bezel. The 1967 models are the first with the white wrting and a bigger GMT hand!
Inside works the Rolex caliber 1575 GMT, a self-winding chronometer movement with date and an additional 24-hour hand for the second time zone. It beats at 19,800 vibrations per hour and is regarded as one of the most robust and reliable movements Rolex built in the 1960s and 70s.
The watch sits on an expandable Oyster bracelet made in the USA and dated 1-1966. Rolex had many of its bracelets for the American market produced locally in the 1960s, and these US bracelets have become sought-after collector items in their own right. Their slightly flexible, “elastic” links give them a very comfortable fit on the wrist.
The watch dates from 1967 and is in excellent condition. All parts are authentic, and it comes with its box.
