ROLEX Explorer "Precision", Reference 6150, White Radium Dial, Stainless Steel, Year 1953, Rare Find
Before the Rolex Explorer had a name, it had this watch. The reference 6150 was introduced in 1953, the very year Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest, and it sits right at the birth of what would become one of Rolex's most enduring tool watches, so early in the story that many examples were simply signed "Precision" rather than "Explorer" on the dial.
The case is steel, 36mm, with the smooth bezel and clean Oyster proportions that would go on to define the model for decades to come. It was the 6150 that first introduced the 3-6-9 numeral layout, but htis is even from before that, with "Explorer Rotor Self-Winding" written in the dial.
The white dial on this example carries its original radium lume, and shows the kind of gentle discoloration around the hour markers, outer ends of the dial and hands that only develops with age, exactly the honest, untouched patina collectors look for on a piece this old rather than a dial that has been relumed or restored.
Inside runs a non Chronometer caliber A296, the automatic bubbleback movement Rolex used across its early 1950s Oyster lineup before moving to the thinner calibers of later Explorer references.
Only produced for a short window before Rolex moved on to the reference 6350 and later the 6610, the 6150 remains one of the rarest and least discussed pieces in the whole Explorer lineage, genuinely scarce today and often overlooked in favor of its better known successors.
