PATEK PHILIPPE World Time, Reference 5131J-001, Cloisonné Enamel Dial, 18k Yellow Gold, Folding Clasp, Box and Papers, Year 2010, Excellent Condition

Some Patek Philippe references are complicated for the sake of it, the World Time is complicated for a genuinely useful reason, and it does it with a dial that turns the whole watch into a small piece of art.

The 39.5mm case is 18k yellow gold, worn on a strap with a folding deployant clasp, striking that balance Patek is known for between a substantial gold watch and one that still sits comfortably on the wrist. At just under 11mm thick, it wears far slimmer than the complication inside would suggest.

The dial is where this reference earns its reputation. It is a genuine cloisonné enamel dial, hand painted by one of the very small number of artisans at Patek Philippe qualified to do this kind of work, depicting the Americas, Europe and Africa in fine gold outlines filled with colored enamel. No two are ever quite identical, since each one is painted by hand rather than printed or stamped.

The world time function itself goes back to a mechanism first developed by the Geneva watchmaker Louis Cottier in the 1930s, and the modern caliber 240 HU carries that idea forward with a self-winding micro-rotor movement, letting you read the time in 24 cities around the world at a glance while the local hour stays set at 12 o’clock.

Production of the 5131J-001 was always limited, with only a small number of these enamel dials completed each year, and the reference itself was in the catalogue for a relatively short window before Patek moved on to later variations.

This example is in excellent condition, comes with its original box and papers, and has no documented service history so far.
