Patek Philippe invented the annual calendar mechanism in 1996, a complication that needs correcting only once a year rather than the four corrections a standard calendar watch demands, and the 5205 remains one of the cleanest, most wearable expressions of that idea in the current catalogue.

The case is 18k white gold, a genuinely versatile 40mm with a slightly concave bezel and polished flanks, worn on a black alligator strap with rectangular scales, hand-stitched and secured by a matching white gold prong buckle. A sapphire case back shows off the movement's finishing rather than hiding it away.

The two-tone black and grey dial arranges the day, date and month through three apertures curving along the upper half between ten and two o'clock, with a moon phase display nested inside a 24 hour indicator at six. Applied white gold hour markers and dauphine hands keep the whole face legible despite the amount of information packed into it.

Inside runs the caliber 324 S QA LU 24H, Patek's own automatic movement delivering roughly 35 to 45 hours of power reserve, finished with Geneva stripes and chamfered bridges and fitted with a gold rotor engraved with the Calatrava cross, visible through the sapphire back.
