KURT SCHAFFO – Skeleton Watch – 18k Yellow Gold / 18k Grey Gold – 34,5mm – Black Crocodile Leather Strap – 2002 – Fresh Service – First Owner – Excellent Condition
We are pleased to present this exceptional timepiece by Kurt Schaffo, one of the most influential and respected masters of skeletonized watchmaking. Crafted in solid 18k yellow gold, this elegant watch measures a refined 34,5mm in diameter, offering classic proportions that perfectly reflect its traditional horological roots.
At the heart of this timepiece lies a superbly skeletonized Frédéric Piguet 71 movement, entirely hand-finished and engraved. Kurt Schaffo was renowned for producing only approximately 20 watches per year, underscoring the exclusivity and artisanal nature of his work. In addition to his own creations, he also skeletonized and refined a similar number of movements annually for prestigious manufacturers such as Zenith and Corum, a testament to the esteem in which his craftsmanship was held within the Swiss watchmaking industry.
The delicate engraving of the movement was executed by his son, Christophe Schaffo, continuing the family’s artistic tradition, while the finely crafted case was made by Gilbert Dubois, further highlighting the collaborative excellence behind this watch. Every component reflects meticulous attention to detail and uncompromising handwork.
Kurt Schaffo played a pivotal role in the development and preservation of skeletonized watchmaking, at a time when very few artisans mastered this demanding discipline. His work significantly influenced the high-art skeleton pieces of the present, firmly establishing him as a foundational figure in this rarefied field of haute horlogerie.
The warm tone of the 18k yellow gold case is beautifully complemented by a black crocodile leather strap, lending the watch a timeless, elegant presence on the wrist. Dating to 2002, this example comes from its first owner, an especially desirable attribute for discerning collectors who value provenance and originality.
Importantly, the watch has just received a fresh service by our master watchmaker, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and peace of mind for its next custodian.
An extraordinary example of independent Swiss watchmaking, this Kurt Schaffo timepiece combines artistic skeletonization, historical significance, and exceptional rarity — a true connoisseur’s watch.
