IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Double Moon Ref. IW502111, 950 Platinum, Limited Edition, 2003
In 2003 IWC brought its famous perpetual calendar into the Portugieser for the first time. This reference is where that story begins. The IW502111 in platinum was limited to 250 pieces, and it combines two things IWC does better than almost anyone: a perpetual calendar that is easy to use and the Double Moon display, which shows the moon as seen from both the northern and southern hemispheres.
The large 44.2 mm case is made of 950 platinum. Platinum is heavier and rarer than gold, and you feel that the moment you put the watch on. The clean, classic Portugieser shape keeps the look calm despite the size, and the matching platinum folding clasp completes the watch.
The silver dial is clearly arranged, with Arabic numerals and slim leaf hands. The perpetual calendar shows date, day, month and the year in four digits. It knows the different lengths of the months and the leap years, so it only needs to be corrected once a century. At 12 o'clock sits the Double Moon display. Its moon phase is so precise that it deviates from the real moon by only one day after 577.5 years.
Inside works the IWC manufacture caliber 50611 with the Pellaton winding system and a power reserve of seven days. The perpetual calendar module is based on the design of Kurt Klaus, the IWC watchmaker whose mechanism made this complication much easier to use.
The watch dates from 2003 and is in excellent condition. It comes from a fine collection and was hardly worn by its first owner. It is delivered as a full set with outer box, wooden box, description booklet, tube with years link and the warranty card.
