Corum Coin Watch “Twenty Dollar 1895” Automatic Ref. 58.14.56, 22K Gold Coin Dial, Box, 1980
Few watches start a conversation as quickly as the Corum Coin Watch. Corum introduced it in 1964, and the idea was as simple as it was daring: take a real American gold coin, slice it carefully into two halves and hide a movement in between. The front of the coin becomes the dial, and the back becomes the caseback. Since then, the Coin Watch has become a true classic and one of the most recognizable watches of its era.
This example is made from an original US twenty dollar gold coin from 1895, a so-called “Double Eagle”. On the dial you’ll see the profile of Lady Liberty, the classic Liberty Head design, surrounded by stars and the year 1895. The slim gold hands sit above the coin without a single hour marker, so the coin can speak for itself. Turn the watch over and the American eagle on the reverse of the coin appears on the caseback.
Inside works a self-winding movement. To fit inside the coin, it had to be extremely thin, and automatic versions of the Coin Watch are much rarer than the hand-wound ones.
Its worn on black aligator strqp with Corum 18kct gold pin buckle.
The watch dates from 1980 and is in excellent condition. It comes with its box.
"A beautiful watch made from a piece of American history, and a conversation piece unlike any other!"
