Cartier Santos-Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor Ref. WHSA0032, Stainless Steel, 2023, Brand-New, 19% VAT Included

The Santos-Dumont is where the story of the men’s wristwatch begins. In 1904 Louis Cartier designed it for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviator who needed to read the time without letting go of the controls. More than a century later, Cartier gave this icon a mechanical heart worthy of its history. The Santos-Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor was introduced in 2023, and it combines the slim, classic case with an entirely new skeleton movement that took Cartier almost two years to develop.

The case is made of stainless steel and measures 31 x 43.5 mm, with a height of only 8 mm. It keeps all the details that define the Santos-Dumont: the visible screws on the bezel, the beaded crown and the blue cabochon. Despite its open construction, the watch is remarkably slim and sits elegantly on the wrist.

There is no classic dial. The bridges of the movement form the face of the watch and follow the square shape of the case, so the structure itself becomes the design. Blued steel sword hands float above it and stay easy to read. At 8 o’clock you can see the micro-rotor, and this is where the watch reveals its most charming detail: the rotor is shaped like the “Demoiselle”, one of the lightweight aircraft Santos-Dumont designed himself.

Inside works the Cartier manufacture caliber 9629 MC, a self-winding movement made of 212 components. The micro-rotor sits within the movement itself, which allows the watch to stay so thin. Through the sapphire crystals on the front and back, you can follow the movement from both sides.

It is worn on a black alligator strap with a steel Cartier pin buckle.

The watch dates from 2023 and is new and unworn. It comes with its papers. The price includes 19% VAT.
