BLANCPAIN Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph, Reference 5200-0130-NABA, Stainless Steel, Box and Papers, Year 2017, Excellent, Full Set

Blancpain has built dive watches since the 1950s, when the original Fifty Fathoms became the first commercially available diver's watch developed for military combat divers. The Bathyscaphe takes that same heritage and gives it a genuine chronograph, without losing an ounce of the toughness the name implies.

The 43.6mm case is satin brushed black ceramic, paired with a unidirectional bezel fitted with a ceramic insert and Liquidmetal hour markers, a material combination chosen for its resistance to scratching and fading rather than for looks alone. The watch is worn on its original NATO strap with a pin buckle, keeping the whole piece light and genuinely practical for actual diving rather than display case duty.

The sunburst black dial keeps a clean three register layout, small seconds and date positioned between four and five o'clock, with the chronograph controlled by a secured movement system that protects the delicate mechanism from accidental damage when setting the watch, a small but genuinely thoughtful piece of engineering.

Inside runs the caliber F385, Blancpain's automatic flyback chronograph movement beating at 5Hz for 1/10th of a second precision, built around a silicon balance spring for improved resistance to magnetism and delivering a full 50 hours of power reserve. The flyback function lets the chronograph reset and restart instantly with a single press, without needing to stop it first, exactly the kind of function a genuine tool watch benefits from.
