This is a very good Hanhart Vintage Flyback Chronograph Bund.
Manufactured in the late 1950s, this was the official Bundeswehr military chronograph.
The Hanhart 417 was Steve McQueens´s other watch, it is iconic, elegant and great to wear, is loaded with history, it is a military issued watch of the first post-war era and is very difficult to find especially in this pristine condition. As compared to its siblings ? most prominently the Heuer Bund ? the Hanhart 417 is significantly rarer and its price, while continuously rising, is still comparatively low.
Hanhart (founded in 1882) were located in the Black Forest region, part of the French Occupation Zone after WWII. As part of the reparation payments to France, the company produced watches for the French Air Force under the name of Vixa (Type 20 Chronographs). In 1956/57 Hanhart was allowed to go back to producing military chronographs for the then newly formed Bund and won the contract for 500 pieces for the Luftwaffe and for the commanders of the Naval Vessels the birth of the 417E. After a year, the contract was lost ? it is believed that for price reasons to Junghans (the J88). In 1967 Heuer replaced Junghans as one of the main suppliers to the Bund. As a result, the Hanhart 417 is a high precision, flyback complication watch that fulfilled the highest standards for the Bund and is very rare.
Following the Bund´s specifications, this Hanhart comes with the correct caseback engravings, the stock number 12-121-5208, the engraving of being property of the Bund -Bundeseigentum- and the Bund Eagle including the department number of the product approval unit (Prüfstelle) , 67 (note, this is not the year of the watch). Its dial and the lumes, including the hands, are flawless and in a lovely vanilla patina, the brass case ? standard for the 417E shows its natural signs of wear and the watch is completely unpolished.
A rare find, an iconic piece with lots of room for further value growth and a pleasure to wear.
A must have for a vintage watch collector.
